Project Description

The evolution of the Copernicus Space Component (CSC) in the mid-2020s aims to meet priority user needs not addressed by the existing infrastructure and/or reinforce services with monitoring capabilities in the domains of CO2, polar, and agriculture/forestry.

A dedicated mission – LSTM (Land Surface Temperature Monitoring) – is being considered in the Copernicus evolution. Its overall objective is to complement Sentinel observation capabilities with high spatio-temporal resolution TIR observations over land and coastal regions in support of agriculture management services and possibly of a range of additional services.

Heron Engineering has been sub-contracted by APCO Technologies SA to perform the mechanical analyses for the platform of the Satellite. The following tasks were performed:

  • LSTM Platform FEM creation

  • Local FEM Models creation

  • Model Checks

  • Static Analysis

  • Modal Analysis

  • Buckling Analysis

  • Sine Vibration Analysis

  • Thermoelastic Analysis

  • Inserts Verification

  • Bolt Analysis

  • Static Test Prediction

As part of the same project, Heron Engineering has been responsible for the design and manufacturing of the LSTM Platform container.

The Transport Container will be used for transporting of the LSTM Platform to the Prime”s facilities for AIT activities. It is designed to sustain the transportation Quasi Static and shock loads. A damping system of Wire Rope Isolators (WRI) is installed under the payload, ensuring that maximum accelerations will not exceed the 2.5g in any load scenario. The WRI were designed and manufactured by SOCITEC. A drop test is performed to verify the selected WRI.

The Transport Container was manufactured by HED Engineering and all the necessary test were done in their facilities.
